Working Together in Health, Safety and the Environment

Big Ben Anniversary Sponsorship

Health and safety and Parliament are inextricably linked. Our evolution and improvements of the health safety and welfare of workers could not have happened without Parliamentary intervention and approval.

Over the past 200 years legislation has been passed by Parliament which has been the seed for the massive improvements we have seen in health, safety and welfare at work and the development and protection of worker rights. The significant milestones include:

Factories

  • Health and Morals of Apprentices Act 1802

    • Apprentices in cotton mills

  • 1833 – Factory Act

  • By 1876 there were 19 Acts to consider

  • All consolidated by:

  • Factory and Workshop Act 1901

    • Gave the power to the Secretary of State to make Regulations

  • Factory Act 1937

    • Removed distinction between types of factory

  • Factory Act 1961

Non Factories

  • Shop Hours Regulation Act 1886

    • Restricted hours of work for young persons

  • Seats for Shop Assistants Act 1899

  • Employment of Women, Young Persons and Children Act 1920

  • Hours of Employment (Conventions) Act 1936

  • Young Persons (Employment) Act 1938

The last 150 years of Parliamentary health and safety intervention has been carried out under the face of the most famous clock in the world which houses the most famous bell in the world - Big Ben.

This year's 150th anniversary of the first ringing of Big Bell will be celebrated by several public events and the publication of a commemorative publication. This publication features all of the Government departments each of which is privately sponsored. Messam & Rider Ltd. are proud to have been asked to sponsor the work of the HSE within the Department of Work and Pensions. Click here or the banner for further information.
